Shahzeb Khan murder in Defence, Karachi

Who is Shahzeb Khan? Many in Pakistan are asking this question.

There was little or no news about him on mainstream media. But through social media, the face of this young 20-year-old has become a symbol of hope against Pakistan's powerful feudal-elites, who live with impunity, above the law.

Pakistan's social media is overflowing with Shahzeb photos with words of sympathy and tributes to the young student who was murdered on 25 December 2012 in Pakistan's largest city Karachi near his apartment.

Cold-blooded murder of Shahzeb Khan in Defence Karachi
Reports and family say Shahzeb was shot dead by two young men from feudal backgrounds Nawab Siraj Talpur and Shahrukh Jatoi, who were with their armed guards. Before the shooting, a small argument erupted between Shahzeb and Talpur, after one of Talpur's employees passed a lewd comment at Shahzeb’s sister. Shahzeb’s father Aurangzeb, a police officer, quickly resolved the dispute. But later that day, Talpur and his friend came back with vengeance on their minds and guns in their hands and eventually killed Shahzeb Khan, the only son of his parents.

The sad incident was described in this report published on the Express Tribune:
Shahzeb Khan didn’t even get time to change the clothes he wore to his sister’s valima (wedding reception). He was in his dark grey dress shirt and trousers when four 9mm bullets pierced through his car – a gleaming blue Swift which was an early birthday gift from his parents, and entered his body, eventually killing this popular 20 year old.
At first, the family had a hard time registering the case due to political pressure from the well-connected Talpurs and Jatois - two well-known Feudal families in Pakistan. “The police first registered a dummy First Information Report (FIR) but later it took him (Shahzeb's father) hours to re-register another version of the FIR naming the actual culprits” Dr. Awab Alvi told GV. He cautions:

If it could happen to a police officer’s son - it can happen to any person in Pakistan!
The names of key suspects in Shahzeb’s murder have been put on Pakistan's Exit Control List (ECL) and a team of investigators has been dispatched to different areas, as per this published report.

Social media responds
Interesting as it may sound, photos of the suspects have been uploaded on the Sindh police’s unofficial Facebook page and is being shared by friends of Shahzeb on their walls with the caption ‘Wanted Criminal’.

Friends and family of Shahzeb started a Facebook page to seek justice for his murder. The Page “In Memory of Shahzeb Khan“ had some 2,500 Likes in less than a day, and has surpassed 60,000 Likes till now (31 December 2012) brimming with messages like, ‘I’ll miss your smile, RIP and you were a real soldier.' Another message on the Facebook page reads:

Courtesy of the “In Memory of Shahzeb Khan” Facebook page

“Shahzeb Khan was a man of gold, an inspiration and a hero. It is now on our shoulders to bring the murderers of Shahzeb Khan to justice and insist on bringing about a change before it is too late to realize how the simple understanding of justice could have made the difference”

“Pakistan needs to wake up as it could happen to any Pakistani”, such tweets along with condolence messages were shared using the hashtag #JusticeForShahzebKhan
Prominent personalities including politician and chairman of Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf party Imran Khan; Nuclear Scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and musician (founder of Junoon band) Salman Ahmad have pledged their support to the Justice campaign. The response by Imran Khan was retweeted some 400 times:

Deeply disturbed to learn about the tragic cold blooded murder of young Shahzeb Khan in Karachi by a kin of some “influential” person.
Dr. Qadeer Khan's tweet:

We all should demand #JusticeForShahzebKhan. Stop it now or be ready to become the next Shahzeb. Decision is yours.
Salman Ahmed's reaction:

The killing of Shahzeb Khan is an attack on all of Pakistan's youth. I stand in solidarity with his brave father Aurangzeb.
Vigil for the fallen victim
Thousands gathered at Karachi Press Club on Sunday afternoon (30 December 2012) for a candle light vigil through a Facebook event.

Protesters  carrying posters and photographs of a charming Shahzeb, repeated slogans of “We want justice, Justice for Shahzeb Khan”, demanding suo motu action from Pakistan's chief justice.

Moved by the peaceful protest, Shahzeb’s friends, put this message on the Page afterwards:

“Amazing turnout at the protest. We can’t thank enough to all the people who stood hand in hand protecting Shazeb Khan's Family, maintaining the discipline. This is just the first brick to the never ending revolution we AIM and bring down the cowards who take pride in misbehaving with our females, and taking lives of the innocents!

Ahmed zuberi writes on the Facebook page:

“I cannot put it in words how comforting it is to see the nation united for my brother and I'm sure he must be glad to see so many holding onto the fire that he sparked to burn down the feudal system.”
Pakistan's Feudal mindset
Shahzeb, in reality, fell victim to the feudal elite mindset in the country and rising gun culture in the city Karachi.  The incident served as a sad reminder of what the spoilt young sons of feudal landlords can do, points out this report, “Murdered in cold blood: For Sindh's feudals, Karachi lives come cheap.” Despite the fact that Shahzeb’s father himself is a police officer, there is little the police has been able to do, so far, to catch the alleged murderers. Taking lives in Karachi has become easy for people who have strong political backgrounds and power, said the devastated father of the young victim:

“I had settled the dispute. Then why was my son killed like this. This is the brutal reign of the feudals. They don’t spare anyone.”
The same report quoted the Investigation officer Murtaza (who is working on Shahzeb’s case) as saying that open use of arms across the city has become common:

“For students and young adults, carrying guns has become a trend. Fights break out and the first thing children do is take out guns on one another. Parliamentarians and influential travel in the city with their guards pointing guns at others. Their children do the same.”
Salman Ahmad, popular musician, brought the real problem to spotlight with these comments at ‏@sufisal:

Shahzeb's murder is not politically motivated. It is a result of guns in the hands of those who consider themselves above the law.
Pakistan's feudal system, widespread in rural areas, continues to enslave local people through debt bondage of generation after generation by landowners who sustain their hereditary rule over allocated land and exert their power.
Sadly, the same feudal elite mindset has sadly transferred into politics of Pakistan, because most politicians are actually from feudal backgrounds. Rights activists believe:

Feudalism is the real cause of the country’s plight and its abolishment is the only solution to Pakistan’s tribulations.”
Commenting on an article in the express tribune, Shahid plead and asks:

Feudal need to be caught and hanged. Such a shame that we are still ruled by feudal! Can the anti-feudal parties and civil society raise a voice for this poor boy?
Karachi's gun culture
So why is the murder of one boy gaining such great support in Karachi? The biggest city of Pakistan which has a multi-ethnic population of 17 million people, has seen recurrent outbursts of violence, claiming hundreds of lives. Since 2003, nearly 5,549 people were killed in different types of violence in the city, including target killings, terrorism, sectarianism, says this report. And Shahzeb's murder is just the tip of a huge iceberg.
Though Shahzeb was not hit by the bullet of a target killer or terrorist but his murder speaks of the city sufferings caused by a gun culture that takes its toll on innocent citizens. In a country where even festive occasions (marriages) are often pronounced by the sound of gunfire, gun violence hardly makes it to the front pages of newspapers or prime time news bulletins.

Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” and that is why Pakistani youth consider this attack an attack on every 20-year-old of the city.

Shahzeb Khan – Symbol of Hope
Soon after the social media campaign gained support, friends of Shahzeb made it clear that the protest was not merely for Shahzeb but for a greater cause to fight injustice and inequality in Pakistan. The campaign for “Justice to Shahzeb” is a beacon of light for justice, a voice for the hundreds of thousands of unknown fallen victims of Karachi. It is evident by the message at Shahzeb’s Page:

“Join us to secure the lives of our young angels and snatch back a country that has fallen under the influence of inhumanity.”
Asking to show support for Shahzeb and join the peaceful protest against the unjust incident and the unfavourable system of Pakistan, his friends urged:

“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and greed.”
In Shahzeb, Karachiites see their loved ones who were cruelly taken away by the city's ever increasing gun culture. And this is the why people are raising voice for this departed soul.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary takes suo motu notice of Shazeb Khan’s murder | NewsPakistan.PK

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday took suo motu notice of news pertaining to Shahzeb Khan’s murder and ordered for a report to be presented in court.

Summoning the Advocate General Sindh and the provincial police chief on January 4, he directed them to bring reports on the case and the investigation.

The heinous incident that sparked anger and worry among a large number of students, civil society and political leaders of the country. Protests and rallies are being held countrywide to urge the authorities to take action against the culprits involved in the incident.

It has been a week since 20-year-old Shahzeb Khan was gunned down, yet the police have failed to make any significant progress due to immense political pressure. Shahzeb was killed allegedly by Shahrukh Jatoi near Mubarak Masjid in DHA on December 25.

The killing resulted from a small argument he had with Nawab Siraj Talpur, when the latter’s servant verbally harassed his sister. Talpur and his friend, Jatoi, allegedly followed Shahzeb, even after the issue was settled, and shot him dead.

The two main suspects reportedly escaped to rural Sindh after the murder. A three-member investigation committee was formed by the Sindh Police but so far, the committee has not made any arrests. The investigation teams that were sent to rural Sindh also came back without any breakthrough.

Suspects in Shahzeb Khan's murder case evade police in Dadu...by The Express Tribune

KARACHI: Suspects involved in the killing of Shahzeb Khan broke through a police containment and escaped from Dadu, Express News reported on Saturday.

On a tipoff on their whereabouts, a police team from Karachi raided a house in Dadu but the suspects managed to flee despite being surrounded.

Police officials claimed that the suspects had been on alert after the media broke the news.

DSP Aurangzeb Khan, the deceased’s father, alleged that influential people were asserting pressure for stopping their arrest, while the police was working for their arrest with responsibility.

20-year-old Shahzeb was killed over a small argument earlier. The prime suspects in the case, Nawab Siraj Talpur and Shahrukh Jatoi, have been on the run ever since.

Murdered in cold blood: For Sindh's feudals, Karachi lives come cheap - The Express Tribune

KARACHI:  Shahzeb Khan didn’t even get time to change the clothes he wore to his sister’s valima. He was in his dark grey dress shirt and trousers when four 9mm bullets pierced through his car – a gleaming blue Swift which was an early birthday gift from his parents, and entered his body, eventually killing this popular 20 year old.

The car which had somersaulted after the shooting near Mubarak Masjid in Karachi’s upmarket Defence area on Tuesday morning, now stands silent opposite the Darakhshan Police Station, a sad reminder of what the spoilt young sons of feudal landlords can do if they or their friends are challenged.

Ironically, Shahzeb Khan, the only son of his parents, was shot dead because of a small argument. He and his sister had just returned to their home in the Country Club Apartments from the wedding when a servant living in the building teased his sister. Shahzeb raised his voice against the harassment. But this did not sink in well with the harasser’s master, one Nawab Siraj Talpur. A fight broke out soon after, but Shahzeb’s father, DSP Aurangzeb, jumped in and quickly resolved the dispute, and the two men left on a good note.

Everything seemed normal. Soon after, Shahzeb decided to have tea with his friends. But the feud wasn’t over in Talpur’s mind till then. As an oblivious Shahzeb drove in his car near Mubarak Masjid, Talpur and his friend Shahrukh Jatoi followed him, along with Jatoi’s armed guards. Police say that in an act of cold-bloodedness, they then allegedly fired four bullets into Shahzeb’s car, leaving him severely injured, and eventually dead.

Soon enough after the incident, the two criminals and their families conveniently escaped to Sukkur. Despite the fact that Shahzeb’s father himself is a police officer, there is little the police have done so far to catch the murderers.

The devastated father of the young victim, Aurangzeb, clad in mourning black clothes, said taking lives in the city had become so easy for people who have strong political backgrounds and power.  “I had settled the dispute. Then why was my son killed like this. This is the brutal reign of the feudals. They don’t spare anyone.”

FIR 519 under murder case 302 has been registered at the Darakhshan Police Station against the two accused and their guards. Initially, the family had a hard time registering the case owing to political pressure coming from other end. However, Investigation officer Murtaza told The Express Tribune that a joint team under SI Chaudhry Nafees had been formed to look into the case. Some say this is a mere formality and nothing will come of this.

“We have requested the FIA to put the names of the accused on the ECL.” The officer said that such open use of arms across the city had become common. “For students and young adults, carrying guns has become a trend. Fights break out and the first thing children do is take out guns on one another. Parliamentarians and influentials travel in the city with their guards pointing guns at others and no one can do anything. Their children do the same.”

The tragic death of this media sciences student at Greenwich University sent shockwaves.  Loved ones who remember Shahzeb for his cute smile, created a page “In Memory of Shahzeb Khan” to seek justice for the act. In just thirteen hours since the page was created, 2,500 people had joined, with dozens leaving messages of ‘I’ll miss your smile, RIP and you were a real soldier, you stood up for the wronged.”

Close university friend Saad Jan, who had just arrived from visiting his friend’s grave said that Shahzeb was the person who would always stand up for others. Another friend, Fahad Wakeel said that he was always remembered for his good nature.

Shahzeb’s uncle, Jahanzaib said: “For him everything ended with a smile. Even when he was leaving from the valima, and I saw him for the last time, he smiled and joked with my daughters and went away, leaving us forever.”

The police suspect that the boys aged 20 or 23, are on their way to Sukkur. So far two people, alleged to be Jatoi’s guards, have been arrested. But even the police are now taking sides. SSP Investigation Faizullah Karejo said that the boys knew each other and were in a fight from before. “The parents had to intervene and everything was settled,” he said. “However, the boys started to fight again and Jatoi shot Shahzeb four times as he sat in his car to go to a friend’s house.”  He added that Jatoi was in the city for winter break and is studying in Malaysia.

Shahzeb Khan's murder: Police arrest prime suspect's security guard... by The Express Tribune

Police arrested the security guard of Shahrukh Jatoi, the prime suspect in Shahzeb Khan’s murder, Express News reported on Monday.

The guard was moved to an undisclosed location for further interrogation, however, the police said that a case had not been registered against him yet.

The police added that no weapon was seized from his possession.
Shahzeb was killed allegedly by Shahrukh Jatoi near Mubarak Masjid in DHA on Tuesday night. The killing resulted from a small argument he had with Nawab Siraj Talpur, when the latter’s servant verbally harassed his sister.

Talpur and his friend, Jatoi, allegedly followed Shahzeb and shot him.

Jatoi’s uncle has rejected allegations against his nephew.

Despite being surrounded, Shahrukh and Talpur managed to evade capture and fled the area.

Shahzeb Khan’s murder: Online movement enters the real world... by The Express Tribune

KARACHI:  The murder of 20-year-old Shahzeb Khan has ignited a movement that left the social media on Sunday evening and entered the real world.

Hundreds of Shahzeb’s friends, supporters and sympathisers gathered outside Karachi Press Club, carrying banners from which his face smiled down upon everyone.

The ‘Justice for Shahzeb Movement’ had gained significant presence online, and Sunday’s turnout showed that his supporters will not rest until justice is served. The protesters demanded the chief justice of Pakistan take suo motu action of the killing and arrest the culprits.

DSP Aurangzeb
The killing mobilised hundreds of people against the unquestioned authority that people with political connections enjoy in the country. At Sunday’s protest, shouts of “We want justice, justice for Shahzeb Khan”, “Shahrukh Jatoi ko phansi doh,” [Shahrukh Jatoi should be hanged] reverberated through the streets of Saddar.

A grim-faced cousin of Shahzeb, Daniyal said that the purpose of this movement was for every youngster killed in an unjust manner. With black bands tied around their arms, Shahzeb’s friends said that he was popular for his good nature. Next to him, another friend Asad, carried Shahzeb’s picture that said ‘I did not die. I just departed to stop the killings of other Shahzebs’. Asad said that despite the fact that the victim’s father was a police officer, he was against guns and never used them.

Asad Butt, a Human Rights Commission of Pakistan representative, said that all the NGOs should unite against the rich who use their power to get away with crimes. Several politicians, including Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Raza Haroon, Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz’s Nehal Hashmi and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf’s Dr Arif Alvi also came, but the protesters insisted on keeping the demonstration free from any political association.

After a peaceful march from the press club to Zainab Market, the protesters then relocated to Sea View from where they walked to Shahzeb’s house in Country Club Apartments. Shahzeb’s mother sat in front of the building’s main gate, where the argument had taken place. With her head hung low, she recited prayers for her son’s soul. Afreen Shiraz, who turned up with her husband after seeing Shahzeb’s memorial page, said that every parent should become a part of the movement. “I have two teenaged daughters and I get worried about them as they have kids in their schools with armed guards. The wrong usage of guns needs to be stopped.”

DSP Aurangzeb, Shahzeb’s father, said that he would not give up. “Those influential people can use their power and money to stop the police from arresting the criminals but we will not give up. I will knock on every door to get justice for my son.

Shahzeb's murder: Suspect’s uncle claims charges are false... by The Express Tribune

SUKKUR: The uncle of one of the suspects in Shahzeb Khan’s murder has rejected allegations against his nephew.

At a press conference held in Sukkur, Subedar Khan Jatoi, the brother of Sikander Ali Jatoi whose son Shahrukh Jatoi is a prime suspect in the case, claimed the allegations against his nephew were false. He maintained Shahrukh did not know either Shahzeb or Nawab Siraj Talpur, the second suspect in the murder.

Elaborating his version of the incident, Subedar Jatoi claimed that on December 24 – the day Shahzeb was murdered – his nephew Shahrukh had been driving back home from a McDonald’s outlet in Karachi’s Seaview locality when he was held up near the Country Club by a quarrel between some people. He said Shahrukh, who according to him had been studying in Australia and was spending a 10-day vacation in Karachi, was attacked by the quarrelers initially but was allowed to leave later.

According

According to Jatoi, while Shahrukh returned home subsequently, sometime later some other men killed Shahzeb near the locality. He asserted that his nephew and Talpur were nominated in the FIR for ‘no apparent reason’.

Jatoi claimed Shahzeb’s father DSP Aurangzeb was related to Pakistan Peoples Party leader Nabil Gabol. He maintained Shahrukh was implicated in the case on Gabol’s insistence, adding that the latter wished to malign Shahrukh’s father Sikander Jatoi politically. Lashing out at DSP Aurangzeb, he demanded the case be investigated by someone ‘considerably honest’.

He asked the government and judiciary to conduct an inquiry into the matter so that both the victim and the innocent party receive justice.

Suspects capture in Dadu
The Express Tribune has learnt that both Shahrukh and Talpur managed to break through a police cordon and evade capture in Dadu on Saturday.
According to police sources, the police team sent from Karachi to investigate Shahzeb’s murder raided a house in Dadu following a tipoff regarding the suspects’ whereabouts. Despite being surrounded, Shahrukh and Talpur managed to evade capture and fled the area.

Police officials claimed that the suspects had been on alert after the media broke the news.
Meanwhile, Inspector Aslam Khakrani, the officer heading the investigation, has said that the police team is currently chasing the suspects in interior of Sindh and was very close to apprehending them. Beyond this, however, the officer refused to share any details regarding the investigation with the media until Shahrukh and Talpur were arrested.

Storm Sandy: US counts cost as Sandy recedes

At least 40 people have been killed, millions are without power and transport across the north-eastern US has been severely disrupted as storm Sandy heads north for Canada.

In New York City, 18 people have been killed and the flooded subway remains closed until further notice. More than 18,000 flights were cancelled, though reduced services are to resume in New York and New Jersey. President Barack Obama, who has suspended his election campaign, is due to visit affected areas in New Jersey.

The storm was causing heavy snowfalls over West Virginia on Tuesday afternoon. It was due to turn towards western New York state before moving into Canada on Wednesday.

Though forecast to weaken, it was expected to cause heavy rain and flooding.
Earlier, Sandy killed nearly 70 people as it hit the Caribbean.

At least eight million homes and businesses are without power because of the storm, says the US Department of Energy.

Sandy brought a record storm surge of almost 14ft (4.2m) to central Manhattan, well above the previous record of 10 feet (3m) during Hurricane Donna in 1960, the National Weather Service said.

"This was a devastating storm, maybe the worst that we have ever experienced" New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

New York's subway system sustained the worst damage in its 108-year history, said Joseph Lhota, head of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).

Subway tunnels were flooded and electrical equipment will have to be cleaned before the network can re-open.

Mr Bloomberg said there was "no timeline" for when the subway would restart, but he hoped buses could begin running again on Wednesday.

It is likely to be two or three days before power is restored to most of the city, Mr Bloomberg said. John F Kennedy airport and Newark in New Jersey are due to reopen at 07:00 (11:00 GMT) on Wednesday, with a reduced service, though New York's LaGuardia airport will stay shut.

The New York Stock Exchange says it will also re-open after two days' closure, as will the Nasdaq exchange. The last time the stock exchange shut down for two days was in 1888.

Ban on Shisha Smoking in Sindh Provision (Pakistan)

April 2nd, 2012

The Deputy Commissioners of all five districts of Karachi have been directed to launch a crackdown campaign against places offering shisha smoking from today by Karachi Commissioner Roshan Ali Shaikh. This is in compliance with Sindh Home department’s imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code banning shisha smoking/selling across the province for two months.

The ban came following a resolution, which was adopted by the Sindh Assembly in May last year. Sindh government has already banned the sale of Gutka in the province.

Smoking a shisha pipe is as bad for people as smoking tobacco, the Department of Health and the Tobacco Control Collaborating Centre has found.

People who smoke shisha, or herbal tobacco, can suffer from high carbon monoxide levels, its research revealed.

It found one session of smoking shisha resulted in carbon monoxide levels at least four to five times higher than the amount produced by one cigarette.

High levels of carbon monoxide can lead to brain damage and unconsciousness.

Shisha is a water-pipe, popular in many Arab countries, in which fruit-scented tobacco is burnt using coal, passed through an ornate water vessel and inhaled through a hose.

The Controversy Of Sex Education By Dawood Public School Karachi

After the case of Al-Umer Foundation School and the demise of Yaqeen Educational Foundation in Karachi some serious steps by the government and education department should have been taken but it looks that all efforts of journalists and media are ending in smoke as another educational crisis hits Karachi.

Dawood Public School, a renowned girls school in Karachi, came into news when Daily Ummat published a story about the school having a Science textbook in its curriculum containing sex education.

Later it was known that such controversial stuff was also included in classes 6 and 7. When students of the school and Parents protested against teaching ‘sex education’ and ‘family planning’ to immature minds of students, the management expelled students of Class 6 and 7 namely Alina Salman, Maheen Salman, Rabia Merchant and Aisha Merchant.

On Wednesday, parents of expelled students protested against the expulsion and immoral course material at the school which quickly gathered media attention. In reaction to which the management shut down the main doors and allegedly did not allow the students to go home. However, parents forcefully opened the doors, after which the school administration rusticated many students from the school. CEO of Dawood Public School Ms. Sabrina Dawood reportedly misbehaved with the parents and after the protest she left the school.

Dawood Public School started to get modern and enlightened since Sabrina Dawood joined as CEO (fancy having a CEO in a School). A graduate from University College London with MSc in Medical Anthropology and qualified with a BA in Anthropology and Law from the London School of Economics, Ms Dawood took intiatives to “liberalize” the school, accommodating more than 1500 girls.

Starting with a protest rally against swat girl flogging and a concert of Zaib and Hanya, Dawood Publich School had recently made it mandatory for girls to have guitar lessons and even ordered them to purchase the instruments.

Dawood Public School is teaching foreign syllabus using international books to children. The controversial material is from science book 5A published by Marshall Cavendish. The book of class 7th ‘Science Matters volume B’ contains diagrammatic representation of reproductive process in animals including human and information about safe and secure sex and birth control methods.

According to School Principal Mrs Waqar the controversial matter in the books are stapled and not being taught adding that the book, in which the ‘objectionable’ chapters were included, was being used by many other schools. However, the book mentioned in the newspaper is not listed in official curriculum listed at school’s web site (check science book for grade 5)
The view of school administration regarding the course material was published in Daily Times, August 07:
“We should be progressive. We are not providing sex education rather it is basic biology taught all over the world in elementary classes, “The reproduction process is something natural and children should learn it,” the administration argued. “Children are like scientists and they want to learn about things happening around them. Science provides them with answers so there is no wrong in it,” the school administration added, defending the inclusion of the chapter. “Of course we are tense as some elements are bad mouthing us and giving us a bad name,” the administration said.
In the same news report Sindh Assembly member Humera Alwani, who is also a member of Special Inspection Committee on Education, endorses the opinion. “Children should learn about natural processes, adding that the government supports the inclusion of such topics in the curriculum. We cannot leave our children in darkness any more,” said Alvani while vowing that the government would not let anyone come in the way of providing modern education to the masses”
Commenting on the incident, Naveed Zuberi, adviser to Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq, said that they would not allow any school to teach such courses, saying:
“This is not USA or Europe, this is Pakistan and our culture does not allow us to teach these things at school”.
On Thursday, a team of Ministry of Education along with media representation and members of “Parents Action Committee” raided Dawood Public school and after having negotiations with the Principal and Management, decided to:
  • Seal Dawood Public School
  • Confiscate controversial teaching material, including Science and Islamiat Books
  • Instructed the administration to change school timings with respect to Ramadan
  • Make Guitar learning classes optional for students.
Parents demanded the arrest of CEO Sabrina Dawood and ban on male staff to enter girls section, especially the toilets.
Whatever the school administration and parents say and wherever they want their children to study, one thing is clear that all the private schools in the city, in collaboration with the Sindh government, need to clarify their curriculum to the parents and let them decide what they want their children to learn. If they continuously keep their curriculum uncertain such controversies would likely arise. Also, the Education Deparment should play its part and pro-actively monitors the curriculum and activities of schools across Karachi.

Mubashir Lucman & Meher Bukhari of Dunya News proved fraud with Malik Riaz

LAHORE - That trouble comes in threes could not be any truer than in the case of the latest scandal hitting mainstream media and social media, dubbed “Mediagate”. What started as mere allegations against Dr Arsalan Iftikhar that first turned into a storm that shook the very foundations of judiciary, has now turned into another earth-shaking scandal that has put at stake the careers of many prominent journalists in the country, and putting into question the role of the media as a watchdog against corrupt practices.

“Bahriagate” or “Familygate” has seemingly opened up a Pandora’s Box, and Malik Riaz’s revelations have put some of the anchors on a warpath.

After appearing in a press conference, which in itself spurred the Supreme Court to initiate contempt of court proceedings, the real estate tycoon and central character of Bahriagate, Malik Riaz, appeared in an interview on Dunya News TV channel, hosted by Mehar Bukhari and Mubasher Lucman, which has brought a rumble along the foundations of Pakistani media.
First it was Najam Sethi of Geo TV and Syed Talat Husain of Dawn News who sparred and traded punches a few days ago, mostly over their intellectual capacity and professional integrity. Echoes of this episode had barely died down when this explosion was heard on the vibes.

The recent interview was routine business but what really proved to be shocking was behind-the-scenes video footage that somehow got leaked and was uploaded on YouTube, and was soon doing the rounds in the social media. It appears from the footage that Malik Riaz had planted questions in the interview. The hosts also appear to be helping him prepare his answers, and in certain cases mouth-fed him some answers. He appeared to take full advantage of his position and contact with the management of Dunya News who told the hosts not to interrupt him and give him as much time as he wanted.
The video also shows political scions of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif interrupting and giving their input to the hosts on points relevant to them.
“Why don’t you start talking about it yourself, otherwise [if we ask] it will seem planted, which it is, but I don’t know if it should look planted,” an otherwise ferocious Mehar at one point suggested to Malik Riaz.
Both Mehar and Lucman in the start reminded Riaz of mentioning ‘Code of Conduct’ for judges, where “as per section 4 listed on their website also, even if a judge is related to one of the lawyers involved in a case or personally knows someone in the case, they should quit,” Lucman says, while Mehar adds, “and in this case it’s his [CJ’s] son”.
During the interview Mubasher Lucaman, known for his no holds barred approach, seemed upset and offended at the very idea of hosting a programme jointly with Mehar Bukhari, who in herself has seen a fair deal of controversy during her career as an anchorperson. He was piqued when Mehar insisted on deciding who was going to ask Malik Riaz questions. In fact, he did get up and walked out of the room when Mehar did not give in. Later, under persuasion by both his co-host and the guest, he came back. He also said: “I’ll say it on air that I’ve been ‘pressurised’ by Mian Amir Mehmood and Malik Riaz to do this programme.”
It also appeared that he was more interested in defending the political scion of the Chaudhrys of Gujrat, Moonis Elahi, who Mehar wanted to ask a question about from Malik Riaz, than asking direct questions from the guest.
Lucman was also adamant in bringing into debate the name of Hamid Mir, host of a well-known TV talk show, for “taking a villa” from the tycoon to which Malik Riaz resisted. Lucman apparently handed him a cell phone, in his support, on the other line of which was, he said, Abdul Qadir Gilani, the son of Prime Minister Gilani. Meantime, Maryam Nawaz sent a text message to Mehar clarifying the situation regarding allegations that Malik Riaz had given Hamza Shehbaz a bullet-proof car.
The video has become the talk of the town as almost every talk show was seen discussing it.
Hamid Mir of Geo News used the video in his programme, Capital Talk, and asked scathing questions from his guests that included Khawaja Asif of the PML-N, Qamaruz Zaman Kaira of PPP and Imran Khan of PTI. He was quick to point out the laxity shown by his colleagues in the media though he exonerated himself from all the allegations levelled against him in that interview. He insisted, “All of us journalists who have been named in the list must put ourselves up for accountability by the PFUJ and the courts.”

He was referring to a list allegedly published on the official letterhead of Bahria Town and containing names of 19 journalists with the amount of money, vehicles, property and other favours they received from the Bahria Town management. The Bahria Town management has denied publishing the list.

In their defence, the management of Dunya News claims that the controversial video footage was stolen by a rival media group and thus could have been manipulated and edited into something it never was intended for.

Mehar gave a dispassionate defence of her actions in her programme ‘Crossfire’ while claiming that nothing out of the ordinary was done during the interview. “Everybody in media does what we did,” she said. “Journalists in that list are in the process of consultation on how to take legal action against Bahria Town,” she added.

Meanwhile, sources told Pakistan Today that Lucman has been “suspended for three days” by the Dunya News management, and an enquiry has been started against him for his controversial actions during the interview. Malik Riaz had in fact warned him during the interview that he would have to answer a lot of questions about his comment with regard to “having been pressurised by Mian Amir” on-air.
Meanwhile, in a related development, Nasim Zehra has resigned from her position as the Director Current Affairs, Dunya News, in the aftermath of this leaking of behind-the-scenes video.
The turmoil at Dunya News also brings into focus the role of emerging media barons and their hobnobbing with the powers that be
